from First Congregational Chattanooga

A long-vacant historic black church on M.L.K. Boulevard (in Chattanooga, TN) will be coming back to life as a performance hall.

Freddie Cook, who is heading the team of workmen restoring the ornate brick church at the corner of Lindsay Street, said earlier plans to make it into several condominiums proved too expensive.

Mr. Cook said the old First Congregational Church will be restored to its former grandeur and used as a hall for rock, jazz and blues.

The church has been vacant since Sept. 2, 2001, when the last service was held there.
